Day Four Morning Presser

The House Republicans are starting off Day 4 with a bang. Newt Gingrich started the presser (I missed most of his speech). Several members spoke including Rep. Rob Bishop (UT1) and Rep Adam Putnam (Fl12). These two gentlemen spoke with a passion that was contagious. The line of the presser (for me anyway) came from Rep. Putnam who said that the people were "crying out from the sidewalks at parades demanding what Congress is going to do to fix the energy crisis".

I have a feeling todays speeches are going to be very interesting indeed!

UPDATE: Here are a couple of quotes from Utah's Rep. Bishop. First is from the morning presser.

If you are rich, the high price of gas is inconvenient. If you aren't rich, if you are like the rest of us, the high price of gas is life changing!

So very true Congressman....

"There are a lot of pro-energy Democrats. Unfortunately, a few anti-energy Democrats are prohibiting a debate. What we are doing here is unique...What happened Friday was unusual...this issue is different than any other issue debated in this chamber. It is not driven by special interests; it is not driven by politics; it is driven by the American people." "The American Energy Act rewards Americans for solving their problems. It rewards American creativity without having the government pick winners and losers."

That has always been my "beef" with corn ethanol subsidies. The government is deciding which alternative will win while punishing another (sugar ethanol from Brazil which is tariffed to death). Let the market decide which will work better in the long run!

  • Fact: Fuel conservation from doing simple things like keeping tire inflated to the right air pressure saves more fuel than we would ever get from offshore oil drilling.

    Via Think Progress:

"Last week, the Auto Alliance and the National Auto Dealers Association sponsored tire pressure checks for members of Congress and their staff who park in the Rayburn Office Building. Surprisingly, we found that most drivers had tires between 5 and 7 pounds under inflated — some had tires under-inflated by as much as 20 pounds. This significantly reduced their vehicle’s fuel economy."
