Legislative Malfeasance

Once again our US House of Representatives voted on a bill that NO ONE EVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ, just as they had done on the "stimulus" bill. The chairman of the Energy Committee, Henry Waxman, even threw in a 300 page amendment at 3am on the day that they voted on the bill and when some legislators had the nerve to ask for a copy of the bill to read, they were told "it's here somewhere!"

I just have one question for the defenders of the actions of the House Leadership - if these bills are so good, why can't the House abide by their own rules (and their President's rule) and post the bill for 72 hours on their website before the vote? Are they so afraid of the voters that they can not handle a little criticism?

  • Waxman-Markey is a bad piece of legislation that cannot stand the light of day. I'm counting on the Senate to kill it.

  • BTW H.R. 2454 (PDF) is available online. If you're masochistic enough to read it. It' 1,092 pages.

  • Waxman-Markey, aka ACES Act, should be called the National Energy Tax because that's what it is.

It isn't an energy bill because it cuts our traditional energy supply more than green energy increases domestic energy supply.

It isn't environmental legislation because it won't have a rat's patutie of a difference on polution, climate change or the hot button items environmentalists yap about:

Despite disagreeing with him “100 percent, politically,” Weisman said he agreed with Horner that the Obama administration’s cap-and-trade program likely won’t do anything to effect climate change. “Like the Kyoto treaty, it won’t bring down global warming,” Weisman said. “You’d need something more like a 40 percent cut in emissions (to do that).”

Weisman is Bob Weisman, a professor of meteorology at St. Cloud State.

  • Richard,

I am curious as to what you find to be bad about Waxman Markey and what you would do to change it?
