Tortillas anyone

Well I certainly hope that the corn ethanol crowd is happy. They are now responsible for riots and hunger in Mexico.

"For many of Mexico's poorest people the tortilla is a staple of their diet, with as much as a third of their wages being spent on the bread. "

You see, because of ethanol and the push for renewable fuels, the price of corn tortillas has gone up 400%!!! That's' right - 400%!

"Under the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, Mexico used to get cheap corn imports from the US, but Mexico's Economy Minister Eduardo Sojo has said that with more US corn being diverted into ethanol production, supply is dwindling. "

Because more corn is being diverted to ethanol production, corn supply is dwindling and people can't afford to buy tortillas. I wonder if we will wake up once it is AMERICANS who can't afford to buy food staples. Then maybe Senator Coleman and Governor Pawlenty will wake up and get off of the ethanol bandwagon!

Here is a hot tip for all of you who want to "mandate" ethanol usage. Why not let the market find the right alternative fuel. I know, it's a radical thought, but who knows it just might work...
