Happy Holidays Vs. Merry Christmas

Much has been made this last week (thanks to State Sen. Chris Buttars) about the so called "War on Christmas". What has drawn the wrath of many on the Christian right (including Sen. Buttars) is the current practice of many retail establishments to say "Happy Holidays". While there are legit reasons to rant about the hyper political correctness around Christmas (not allowing red or green napkins and decor in schools, renaming Christmas Trees "Holiday Trees - what other holiday decorates trees as part of the celebration?), the advent of the "Happy Holidays" greeting is NOT one of them.

Here's a list of the religious holidays that are celebrated in December.....

Hanukkah (celebrated this year from December 21 through 29)
St. Lucy Day (a Catholic holiday)
Winter Solstice (yes that is a holy day for the Wiccans)
Christmas
Boxing Day (ok not a religious holiday but it is a day of celebration for Canadians, Brits and several US states)
and of course New Years Eve

What I recognize (and Senator Buttars does not) is the vast majority of Americans celebrate either Christmas or Hanukkah.

So while I celebrate my holy holiday of Christmas, I would like to say - to everyone else out there who is or will be celebrating a holiday at some time during this month...

Happy Holidays....

...and to Senator Chris Buttars - BAH HUMBUG to you sir.

  • LL - you forgot Kwanzaa which begins Dec 26 (it's not exactly religious but has many religious overtones).

  • I suppose since I included Boxing Day.....But Kwanzaa is more of cultural holiday.

6 of one half a dozen of the other I suppose.

  • I couldn't agree with you more. While I personally put up a Christmas tree and Christmas decorations, etc., I have no problem with the more inclusive "holiday" greeting.
