The religion of peace strikes yet again:
"PESHAWAR: Men claiming to be local Taliban bombed a girls school in Noor Ali village in Darra Adam Khel on Monday night and threatened further attacks if the students did not wear veils. The militants also left Urdu pamphlets at the school saying, “Be veiled, otherwise we will bomb you again.”
Now I really am a live and let live kind of person, however, I am also a child of the 1960's and as such (given that I am a woman) women's rights are very important to me. Any religion that refuses to allow girls access to education for any reason but especially because of what they are wearing is going to get flack from me.
"A source in the area, seeking anonymity, told Daily Times that the local Taliban had asked locals to stop their daughters from going to college. “They have however allowed veiled students to go to middle and high schools,” he added. He said most Darra Adam Khel residents had stopped their children from going to schools and colleges, but some were still sending their daughters to school. "
And when a supposedly "enlightened" Western European country gets into the act...
"A guide to Islam is being given to primary schools across Britain containing a headscarf, a prayer mat, a prayer cap, sacred Ihram clothing worn during the pilgrimage to Makkah, a poster of the Muslim prophets and a compass to locate the direction of Makkah."
Gee I wonder what they would do if Pat Robertson showed up at their school with a guide to Christianity - complete with crucifix, Bible, CDs, tracts and other instruction on how to give their lives to Christ. Do you think that would get into 800 classrooms? I think not!
I have no problems with teaching understanding religious beliefs as long as ALL religious beliefs get equal treatment. Let them teach Islam - and Judiasm and Christianity and Buddhism and Animism and Shintoism and the various Native American religions. Otherwise teach none at all.
And if you are going to teach tolerance of a religion, you had better be tolerant of ALL religions and not just the ones that advocate violence against women.
